How passphrase encryption works in Trezor Suite:

What is a Passphrase?

  • A passphrase is an advanced security feature that can be used to protect your cryptocurrency accounts. When enabled, your Trezor device prompts you to enter a secret phrase in addition to your numeric PIN every time you connect the device.

How It Works:

  • When you enter a passphrase, your Trezor combines the existing randomness of your recovery seed (the 24-word backup phrase) with your chosen input (the passphrase itself). This combination generates a completely new wallet.

  • Think of the passphrase as an extension of your recovery seed. Unlike the randomly generated seed, the passphrase is chosen by you. It acts as a “salt” in the process of deriving your accounts from the seed.

  • The passphrase irreversibly modifies the structure of your original seed, creating a new wallet tied to your original recovery seed.

Creating a Strong Passphrase:

  • Your passphrase can be any word, phrase, set of letters, or even a sentence, up to 50 characters long.

  • Passphrases are case-sensitive.

  • Entering an “empty” passphrase allows access to the original seed-only wallet.

Practical Example:

  • Let’s say you’ve been using your PIN-protected Trezor to secure cryptocurrencies. Now, you decide to enhance security by adding a passphrase.

  • To enable passphrase protection:

    • Visit Trezor Suite and connect your device.

    • Open the Settings menu, go to the Device tab, and enable the passphrase feature.

    • Enter your chosen passphrase when prompted.

  • Each time you connect your Trezor, you’ll need both the PIN and the passphrase to access your wallet.

Remember that diligence is essential when setting up and using a passphrase. Keep your recovery seed and passphrase safe, and never share them with anyone!
